500 Waiting!

Have you seen the you tube video from the  Missouri Quilt Co. for
The Sashed Half Hexi Quilt?
I must say I really like this design!

*
*
It's going together quite fast and when complete will be presented by
Quilts of Valour Canada to a Canadian soldier.
 *
*
If you've never heard of  QOV, I encourage you to visit the site.
When I spoke to my area's representative I was floored at the number of soldiers that are waiting for their QOV, in a 1 1/2 hour drive radius from her home, 500! That's 500 waiting!!
That's 500 too many don't you think?

Purge Finish

It may not have been what I was striving for but I did finish one of the three quilts
I had intended for Stitched In Color's PURGE.

This is the largest quilt I have ever completed and it made a nice dent in my scraps.
It measures 70" x 80", a monster for my books!
I wanted a size that kept my foster son covered even when he's been rolling all over the place in his sleep!  This bad boy will do just that.

I thought quilting this big guy was going to be a problem but nothing could be further from the truth!
It all came together nicely.

The back is a collective of large scraps and a small quilt top that I just couldn't get excited about no matter how hard I tried. So in the spirit of being frugal (not cheap), I added the not so loved quilt.

One down and 2 more, this size, to go!
But first I'm in the middle of constructing a special something for a new arrival tomorrow ;)
Check back then.

Scrap Purge Goodies

For a while now I've been meaning to sew up some bowl coasters so it would be easier
for all of us to hold onto a steaming bowl of soup or stew.
These are the bowl coasters I made for the boys.
They were pretty quick to finish and I should have done this eons ago!
I used a piece of insulbrite in between the fabric
and they got the thumbs up award.
My granddaughter will be able to tuck her dolly in with this little scrappy quilt.
I'll whip up a pillow to go with it.

I love the roses on the back and the binding is scrappy too!

Scraps! The Sequel

The PURGE continues in my little corner of the world!

Above is my third quilt top from my abundant supply of scraps!

The second flimsy.

The first quilt top. I had no idea I had so many scraps!

Finally,
I had an absolutely hideous hanging lamp
(I should have taken a before shot).
I'm talking Ugly, green pleated plastic!!
Then an epiphany hit me and abracadabra, hocus - pocus!
I love orange and it brightens up my boys reading area.
Win/Win!! YEP!

I'm such a cut up!

It may have been hotter than a firecracker outside but that didn't stop me from smoking through my scrap stash and doing a little cutting!
Ok. A lot of cutting! 3", 4" & 7" squares for scrappy quilts.

Keeping Busy and Cool

*
Just trying to beat the heat, although it's not quite as bad today.
I decided I'd better get it into gear and sew up some more blocks for my
Northwinds quilt.
*
*
Northwinds (also know as Beans & Corn)
is what I'm stitching up for the RSC2013.
I failed at following the monthly colours but I will be able to
make a dent in my scraps and that's a good thing.
This is what it should look like when complete
*
*
Kinda makes your eye swirl, doesn't it!
I'm looking forward to me and the Mr. cuddling up under it this winter.

HAPPY STITCHING :)

RSC2013 is in the PINK

*
Finally something to show!
*
Boy, oh boy, it's been a bit of a haul to get to this point with my
Northwinds blocks.  This pattern may seem easy and probably is, when you don't have
umpteen dozen  other issues  floating around in my head at the same time.
*
*
So Scrappy's Rainbow Scrap Challenge 2013 is proving to be just that, challenging, indeed.
But that's a good thing because spending time getting my brain out of neutral,
 and then out of reverse
(there's a reason I don't  get  driving a standard transmission)
and into drive has got my mind off other family matters for a little while.
*
*
I know they don't look like much right now but when I've placed them together
I can see the Northwinds (also known as Corn and Beans)
coming together, and I like it!
*
I played around with some other pink pieces and ended up with this block
but I'm not sure whether to keep it for the back of this quilt or make this
and more scrappy, one colour placemats. We'll have to see!
*
*
Sew whatcha doing with your scraps?

My Rainbow Scrap Challenge Inspiration

*
Have you heard about
 and the
2013 RAINBOW SCRAP CHALLENGE?
Truly, I must have been living under a rock or on another planet!
*
The premise is to, over the course of the year, sew up a scrappy quilt of your choice
and be motivated by the other scrap busters joining in!
I have never committed to anything like this before and I do have alot of scraps that leave me
scratching my head as to what to do with them.
This is what I'm going to stitch up, I just love this quilt.
*
*
It's called "Northwinds" or "Corn and Beans".
No, your eyes aren't going wonky it just looks like it...way cool ( I think ).
It's mind bending!
*
This particular quilt is from
This is a real testimony as to what can happen when a bunch of
not-sew-attractive fabrics are combined resulting in this treasure!
*
I can't wait to get started!
*
What are your plans for 2013's sewing list?

NEWFO 2013 WISH TO - DO LIST

*

*
This is the kick off  to 2013 Newfo Challenge brought to you by
Cat Patches!
(isn't this button the cutest)?
Once again, Barb is hosting this fun challenge to all quilters. If your a quilter
that loves to start and not necessarily finish projects then this is THE place to be!
WHY?
"Starting" is the entire idea driving this challenge and the  best part is
you don't have to finish a thing! Zip! Nada! Zilch!
*
This tear I'm going to try to focus on a few key projects with something completely
new to me. For instance,
*

*
I'd like to try a Cathedral Windows Quilt or something with curves.
*
I've just finished reading The Devil's Puzzle by Clare O'Donohue and in the book there
is reference to this quilt design,
The Devil's Puzzle
*

*
Next on my list (in my head) is something modern, circles or a geometric design.
I need to find some ideas for this one yet.
*

*
After seeing some of the most beautiful hand stitching by my blogging buddy Susan,
who is the  Canadian Abroad, I am wanting to give this a try as well this year.
*
*
Susan's stitching is amazing!
Look at the back of this piece...exquisite!
*
*
I'm going to be sorting my scraps for Rainbow Scrap Challenge @ So Scrappy
starting in the new year!
*
*
So that's the start of my 2013 "Wish to - do List" but first I really should try to get
my Laundry Day Quilt quilted, (tomorrow may be promising for that). I haven't finished
a quilt around here for a while and the Mr. has been asking when am I getting another quilt done
for our bed since it's been so flippin' cold and damp here on the Canadian prairies!
Hey! I'm game and since he did ask so nicely  ;)

I also picked this for myself

Garden Grove by Kim Diehl @ Henry Glass's House.
It's very pretty and has some elements I haven't tried yet.

Sewing Spools Sniffling

*
The last couple of days have seen me a tad unwell.
I caught a flippin' cold, yip-eeee!
Not what I wanted to do right at the end of summer nor as the impending school year approaches.
It only took 2 weeks into the school year last year and all the kids had a sniffle to a cough to one staying home for a couple of days. The house could just not shake whatever it was for months.
Poor hubby spent last Christmas flat on his back, 2 weeks later, just when I was suppose to start a mystery quilt along I came down with it and was in bed for almost a week and then couldn't do much more than sit in my chair and watch TV for another week. What an ordeal, so here's hoping this goes and fast!
*
Now about the pic up there. I had read/seen somewhere a post on spool blocks and thought that they are quite cute, sew what's a girl to do but dive right in and this happened!
It still needs to be finished but I didn't have anything else to post about without having my wits about me!
luvin' the dots!

OKay, this one's a little wonky,

this spool has even more wonk to it but I like it.

I like the floral print for the thread on this spool.
It's funny, try as I might I could not get my head around anyone's tutorial for these
sew...I winged it! Yep, I just started pulling fabrics from my stash and sewed them together.
Yes, I know, that explains the wonky-ness to them but you know,
I still like it and I'm still going to put this mini on my  wall of fame!
*
You've probably seen this button/logo popping up all over the place since Saturday/Sunday

Well if you haven't checked it out you should because there are at last count
>146 GIVEAWAYS<
that's right, your eyes are not deceiving you!!!
See this button in my sidebar? or better yet back up to my post from the 25th and start
HOPPING!!!
*
Here's another button you'll be seeing sooooon...
I got lucky enough to be included in this spooktacularly
WICKED BLOG HOP
hosted by the ever so wonderful
Wendy @ Why Knot Kwilt & the amazing Madame Samm.
There could still be space for the WICKED BLOG HOP,
jump on your broomstick and fly over to Wendy's to find out!
*
One more thing I'd like to bring to your attention today if I may,

This button is also in my sidebar and I'd like to invite you, yes you, to join our group.
At this time we are 35 members strong but we would like to invite all quilters,
beginners, new bloggers and seasoned stitchers to meet some of the nicest folks blogland has to offer!
You don't have to have dolls to make doll quilts{I don't} I just like to hang these mini works of art on my wall in my sewing space. I find doll quilts are a fabulous way to try something new on a small scale and be able to complete it in a short time. It doesn't cost to join either like some I've seen.
Just click the button in my SB and your on your way. Believe me, if it wasn't easy to join I wouldn't have!
If you jump in now you might be able to get in on the September Swap {not entirely sure about this}.
Hope to see you at the next  DOLL QUILT SWAP.
